English Program

EWLI English Programmes ClassesThe English Program consists of 6 ESL classes (English as a Second Language) taught by qualified native English speaking teachers. Most of our teachers are from the United States. All are foreigners. The 6 classes we currently offer are:

  1. Introductory English
    1. Beginner Level 1
    2. Beginner Level 2
    3. Beginner Level 3
  2. Intermediate Passages 1 and 2
  3. English Conversation class

The calendar for the English program is the same as for the Hindi program, except that English classes are not taught in July. There are two semesters per year:

Spring Semester: January to May

Fall Semester: August to December.

The detailed schedule of which classes are offered in a given semester is available from the Director of the Foreign Language Institute (FLI). Please contact the FLI for the current list of classes being offered.

New students will be required to take a placement test to determine their level of English so they can be placed in the proper class, unless they specifically request a certain level of classes. Please see the director for an appointment. Returning students should indicate the next level they will be studying.

Registration fee:Rs. 550
Tuition fees per hour:Rs. 750 (individual), 550 (joint), 480 (3-4 students), 280 (5-7 students), 220 (8-12 students) when classes booked on semester basis.

 

Payment Policy:

All new students will be required to pay a non-refundable registration fee of Rs. 550 at the time of registration. Returning students are not required to pay another registration fee. The payment schedule for tuition fees is as follows:

At time of enrollment: first payment of Rs. 6000

Mid-semester: second payment - balance of fees due

Students will not be allowed to attend classes until their fees are paid. Please show your receipt when coming to class the first day. Reminders will be given for the second payment.

Refund policy:

If a student withdraws from classes within two weeks after each payment, they will be refunded 80% of the tuition fee. After this, there will be no refunds, except in extenuating circumstances and with the permission of the director.

Enrollment:

Applications are available in the office of the East West Language Institute or you can enroll online. Please see the director to set up an appointment for a placement test after enrolling. Students registering one month after the start of a semester will have to wait for the following semester to start classes.

Curriculum:

New Interchange by Cambridge University Press. Students will be required to purchase a Student Textbook and Workbook. These are available at the school. Introductory level, levels one through three, Passages and conversation classes will be offered, subject to availability of teachers and the number of students registered.

ESL classes will be comprised of learning grammar, conversation, comprehension, listening skills, pronunciation, intonation, reading and writing.

EWLI reserves the right to cancel a class in case of sickness or emergency. The staff will try to have a substitute in case of sickness, but if no substitute is available, the class will be cancelled for the day.

Important Information:

  • In the student lounge you can find cold, filtered water and hot water, sugar, creamer, tea and coffee, and cold drinks. There is a Rs. 20 charge for the cold drinks and bottled water and a contribution is requested for tea and coffee.
  • Please don’t eat during class unless you are bringing enough to offer to others in the class. Drinks are fine
  • Our center is a NO SMOKING campus, so if you smoke, please do so before coming.
  • Our Administrative Assistant is on duty to answer the telephone, maintain the building, and otherwise assist in smooth functioning of classes. Please let him/her know if you have a problem in any of these areas, and kindly cooperate in making the center a pleasant place for all to study.
  • Please bring your own notebook, textbook and pen or pencil.
  • Please talk quietly in the lounge and outside so as not to disturb the classes. We would encourage you not to bring your friends along to wait for you while you are in class.
  • Please be sensitive and aware of your conduct both in and outside the classroom. We want to maintain a high moral standard of behavior at the center. We do not want to offend other students who are from other cultures.
